So the rumors are true

Not that I expected it to be any different, but it was announced today on both the 6A site and LJ.

Six Apart: LiveJournal Acquisition FAQ

Big news... Six Apart and LiveJournal!

Already, LJ folk are screaming and crying, having laughed and laughed at bloggers who were upset with 6A's licensing issues. Now they fear ads, cost increases, and a general "different LJ" than they were used to.

Only time will tell. I think it's a good thing, for both LJ and 6A. But those who are "Amish" about change have already started crying foul and heading to other places.

I worry that 6A has bitten off more than they can chew. Their customer service/understanding of user community has been subpar in the past (the licensing debacle).

What I'm not sure is what 6A gets out of this other than sheer numbers of eyeballs. If that's them needing a user base to fight Google/Blogger and Microsoft and AOL in people's minds, it's one thing. But what I see when I look at it is:

1. Acquire LJ eyeballs
2. ????
3. Profit!

And that doesn't look so good.

On the other hand, some people like to make a big drama out of anything. For crying out loud, one company acquired another. They haven't even seen any "bad things" happen to them yet. Why are they jumping off of a perfectly fine ship?
